Rotary Clubs Launch Road Safety Campaign to Combat Rising Accidents in Greater Mityana

Rotary leaders in the Greater Mityana region have launched an ambitious road safety campaign aimed at reducing the growing number of road accidents that continue to claim lives and leave many people injured across Uganda.

The campaign was officially unveiled during a joint installation ceremony for the newly elected presidents of the Rotary Clubs of Ssingo Mityana, Mityana, and Kabulasoke-Gomba, held at Enro Hotel in Mityana Municipality.

Speaking at the event, Rotary District Governor for District 9213 (2026/2027), Gerald Obai, described road accidents as one of Uganda’s most pressing public safety concerns and called for collective action from communities, government institutions, and development partners.

“Road crashes have become a national crisis that requires everyone to play a role. We must intensify awareness campaigns and encourage responsible road use to save lives,” Obai said.

He urged Rotary clubs across the country to champion community sensitisation programmes focusing on responsible driving, pedestrian safety, and adherence to traffic regulations.

The ceremony also marked the official installation of Rtn. Rev. Joshua Ssali as the second President of the Rotary Club of Ssingo Mityana, succeeding Beatrice Kagole.

In his inaugural speech, Rtn. Rev. Ssali pledged to make road safety one of the club’s key priorities during his term of office, noting that the increasing number of road accidents has become a major concern for families and communities.

“Every road crash represents a life disrupted, a family broken, and a community affected. We cannot remain silent as accidents continue to rise,” Rtn. Rev. Ssali said.

He added that his administration would work closely with government agencies, schools, transport operators, boda boda associations, and community leaders to promote road safety education and awareness.

“Prevention begins with education. By working together, we can change attitudes and make our roads safer for everyone,” he added.

The joint installation ceremony also saw the induction of Rtn. Viola Biryomumaisho as President of the Rotary Club of Mityana and Rtn. David Mwanje as President of the Rotary Club of Kabulasoke-Gomba.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to championing road safety initiatives in their respective areas and called upon government institutions and development partners to support efforts aimed at reducing road traffic fatalities.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we can build a culture of discipline and responsibility on our roads,” Biryomumaisho said.

“Communities must become active participants in promoting safer roads because every life lost in an accident is one too many,” Mwanje added.

The Officer in Charge of Traffic in Mityana District, Francis Natukwasa, welcomed the Rotary initiative and emphasised the need for increased public awareness, strict enforcement of traffic laws, and responsible behaviour among motorists, boda boda riders, and pedestrians.

“Most road crashes are preventable. If road users obey traffic rules and exercise discipline, many lives can be saved,” Natukwasa said.

Uganda continues to register thousands of road crashes every year, with speeding, reckless driving, drunk driving, and poor road discipline remaining among the leading causes of accidents.

The launch of the Rotary road safety campaign in Greater Mityana is expected to strengthen community efforts aimed at promoting safer roads and supporting national initiatives to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries.
